UCSF-Natividad Family Medicine Residency has developed an innovative SBIRT program training Residents in diverse environments and teaching Residents to train others.
Our program is unique. We are a Family Medicine only Residency Program with an emphasis on training through teaching in the community. There are 24 residents who are responsible for all aspects of care at a county hospital.
Residents start by learning the basic SBIRT skills in lectures and one-on-one teaching with Community Medicine Faculty. Skills are practiced with supervision in multiple settings; continuity clinics, hospital wards, VA clinics, homeless shelters / free clinics, at risk teen high schools, student health centers, rehab centers.
Our group learning curriculum includes first year resident small group sessions where SBIRT principles are introduced and a continuous cycling of lecture topics so that all residents receive each topic over their 3 year training.
Multiple tools are used to evaluate the residents, the curriculum, the training and faculty. Independent evaluators also assess the program.
